National Register of Historic Places in Posey County
One of the acheivements for September is to visit a historical place, museum or zoo. This trip does not have to be with the Pack or Den. It can be a family outing. We have so many choices surrounding our area. We have Mesker Park Zoo , Evansville Museum , Koch Children's Museum and many others. There are some places on the National Register that might surprise you.

Watch for the BSA car in Sunday's Indy 500

Watch for the BSA car in Sunday's Indy 500
The countdown to the Indianapolis 500, "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing," has dipped under the one-week mark. This Sunday, 33 drivers will race 200 laps in hopes of being the first man or woman to cross the finish line.
If you're a racing fan, you'll be watching. If not, you might want to tune in anyway to see the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America car in action.
The car, which will be sporting new centennial colors for the race, will start on the ninth of 11 rows. You can look for Driver Alex Lloyd's gold-and-white BSA car (shown above) right behind Danica Patrick's car in the starting lineup.
Catch all of the action starting at noon (ET) this Sunday on ABC. You can listen to the race on XM channel 145 or Sirius channel 211.
The Indy 500 is the biggest race of the season for BSA Motorsports, which launched this year to help promote the Scouting program and teach boys about math and science.

Wadesville VFW Flower Beds
Friday we started on the flower beds at the VFW in Wadesville. Bushes were pulled out that had been planted 50 years ago. Time for a face lift! We gave the flagpole a new coat of paint and cleared the beds to get them ready for planting. Saturday we started in again. 2nd coat of paint for the flag pole, along with new rigging. We got the flower beds all laid out and planted. Topped them off with rock mulch. The kids worked so hard and we would like to thank everyone that showed up to work on the project. - Parents and kids. Many thanks to several businesses that donated time or materials to help Pack 390 make this happen. We are so grateful to the VFW for letting us use their building for our special events like Blue and Gold and Pinewood Derby. It's only fitting that we should do something special for them in return.

Weather Beltloop and Pin - Weather Spotter Classes Sat, March 20 and Wed, March 24th
The Weather Belt Loop and Pin are one of the interesting achievements that our Cubs can earn. Our visit to Ron Rhodes has already helped up to complete part of this requirement. The Weather Spotter Classes will help fulfill several more points of achievement. These classes are interesting and fun and best of all free. As you know with us living in Tornado Alley, it's best to be prepared. A great way for our Scouts to help the community is by being an Official Skywarn Weather Spotter for the National Weather Service.
Tiger Requirement - Go outside and watch the weather
Wolf - Elective - Some of this is covered in the class.
- FAMILY ALERT
- Talk with your family about what you will do in an emergency.
- In case of a bad storm or flood, know where you can get safe food and water in your home. Tell how to purify water. Show one way. Know where and how to shut off water, electricity, gas, or oil.
- Make a list of your first aid supplies, or make a first aid kit. Know where the first aid things are kept.
Bear - Elective - WEATHER
- Learn how to read an outdoor thermometer. Put one outdoors and read it at the same time every day for two weeks. Keep a record of each day's temperature and a description of the weather each day (fair skies, rain, fog, snow, etc.).
- Build a weather vane. Record wind direction every day at the same hour for two weeks. Keep a record of the weather for each day.
- Make a rain gauge.
- Find out what a barometer is and how it works. Tell your den about it. Tell what 'relative humidity' means.
- Learn to identify three different kinds of clouds. Estimate their heights.
- Watch the weather forecast on TV every day for two weeks. Describe three different symbols used on weather maps. Keep a record of how many times the weather forecast is correct.
I have been a Skywarn Spotter for over 10 years and have been to the class several times. You do not have to be re-certified to maintain your status. I also have several books and field guides about weather. If you would like to borrow them, just let me know.
Rural King also has a simple Weather Station for 4.99. This is a rain gauge, thermometer, wind and wind chill meter. We will be putting this out Saturday, so that Austin can start recording his readings next week.
We will also be attending the Wednesday Weather Spotter Classes. If anyone would like to go along with us, just let us know.
Weather Spotter Classes
Evansville: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, March 20 and Wed, March 24, 6pm – 9pm Evansville Central Library, 200 NW Martin Luther King Blvd. Contact: Terry Brooks at (812) 401-9632. (map)
Area residents will have multiple opportunities to receive free Skywarn weather spotter training from the National Weather Service during March. “The National Weather Service relies on trained volunteers to supplement Doppler radar information on severe storms and tornadoes,” according to the agency. “Weather reports from trained spotters are used along with doppler radar data to issue warnings of tornadoes, severe thunderstorms, and flash floods,” the weather service said. Classes run two to three hours long. All course materials are furnished, and a certificate of completion will be provided at the end of class.

Our 100th Anniversary Celebration is shifting into high gear with some help from Silver Buffalo Jeff Gordon! As part of the annual “Scout Day at the Races” at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, eight Cub Scouts from the BSA’s Flint River Council had the opportunity to meet, “talk shop,” and race their Pinewood Derby cars with the four-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion.
Gordon joined the Scouts in a pinewood derby competition that was filmed by Fox Sports today. It’s part of a story scheduled to air this Sunday as part of Fox Sports’ pre-race coverage of the Kobalt Tools 500. Tune in to watch! If you can’t watch live, set your DVR because it’s going to be fun. Prerace coverage begins at 12 p.m. ET. On Saturday and Sunday, prior to the Camping World Trucks and Sprint Cup Series races, Scouts will also present the colors during the prerace flag raising ceremonies. Any Scout in uniform will be admitted for free to Saturday’s events at the speedway.

Go See It!!! Saturday March 6th - Lots of Things
We will be starting our day meeting at Wesselmans Woods at 9 am, then over to the Red Cross for Safety Day activities and at 1 there is a free magic show at Teachers Aid Store off Stockwell Ave. We should be able to check off quite a list of requirements for Tigers and Wolves.
The cost for Wesselmans Sugarbush Festival is 6.40 for adults and 3.60 for kids (under 3 are free) I did get them to give us a group discount to get the prices down to this level for us. This includes the tours and a pancake and sausage breakfast, all you can eat.
We will then go over to Red Cross Safety Day which is free.
The Magic Show is free also.
Hope to see you there.
See below for information on each.
This event is a celebration of the maple sugar harvest from the trees of the Preserve. Visitors of all ages will be guided through the woods to observe how sap harvested from the sugar maple trees becomes the pure
maple syrup that we all love to pour over hotcakes. Each visitor is served a hearty breakfast that includes sausage, all-you-can-eat pancakes with pure maple syrup from one of Indiana's own maple sugarbushes, and a beverage.
We welcome you to join us for this local tradition of discovery and fun in the Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve!
Admission: $7 adults (13 and over); $4 youth; children 3 and under are free! Discounted admission for Wesselman Nature Society members.
Magic Party - Teacher's Aid Store 301 - N Congress - March 6th 1pm
Magic Tricks, Balloon Animals and Games
Magician Scott Thomas will be at the store for his Magic Show

Great Sunflower Project
I have requested 8 packs of seeds for our Scouts to be part of The Great Sunflower Project. I hope to hear soon if we are approved. It's a great project for the boys and easy to do.
Welcome to 2010!
Thanks to your help 2009 was an epic year for The Great Sunflower Project. With over 50 thousand participants we are reaching our goal of documenting bee pollination in the US and developing strategies to protect and restore native bees where they are threatened. Building on the momentum from 2009, we are excited to get going this spring! We have made some changes that I want to share early in the year.
First, we are simplifying our sampling protocol
There are now three steps:
1) count the number of flowers on your plant with pollen;
2) record all bees (not just the first 5) your sunflower for 15 minutes; and
3) enter the data online.
You do not need to write down temperatures or the number of other sunflowers in your garden.
We have very few people who see five bees in 15 minutes and the analysis of the data becomes much simpler if everyone samples for the same length of time. So, if you can, grab your favorite beverage and write down what time you started and a time for each bee that visits. We are in the process of modifying the data entry form on the website to reflect these changes. It isn’t quite finished though.

Vertical Escape 2010
We had a great time Saturday at Vertical Escape. 24 Scouts participated, along with numerous parents. There were some awesome fathers who were trained to be belayers. The Moms were busy being cheerleaders and holding our breaths. We learned the rules and safety for climbing and we were on our way UP!
You can learn more about the calls and signals of climbing here at Boy's Life.

We will be meeting at South Terrace Elementary School at 6. We are going to work on our skits, centerpieces, and costumes for the Blue and Gold Banquet.
I have a couple cardboard boxes so far. I was told that Temple Inland would give us all we needed. It's raining today, so I can't send Dan in his truck to get some. Let me know what you have so far. If we need more I can go Monday in my Blazer and get the rest.
Jenni Orpurt has volunteered to bring snacks and drinks.

Throwing Out An Idea
Adventure Base 100 Traveling Scout Museum will be in Louisville, KY - April 23 - 25.
Adventure Base 100 is the ultimate Scouting experience. This experiential 10,000-square-foot campus provides an exciting view of the Boy Scouts of America's illustrious 100-year history and influential future. Rolling into more than 40 different cities across the country in 2010, Adventure Base 100 features a ropes course, hands-on exhibits, a multi-sensory IMAX-like Go Scouting! Dome, and much, much more!
Louisville is a 2 hour drive (123 miles). I looked at hotels in the area and most rooms at hotels with indoor pools are around $100/night. What I had in mind was driving up on Saturday morning and spending the afternoon at Adventure Base 100, dinner, then the evening at the hotel. The boys (and adults) could enjoy the indoor pool.
On Sunday, after check-out, we could all go to the Louisville Zoo. They do have group rates for 15 or more which would get the price down to 8.95 adults/6.40 children for admission. There are lots of extra things to do at Louisville Zoo, some free, some with extra fees. If you are a current member at Mesker Park Zoo, Louisville Zoo is free.
Just throwing out an idea for a group outing and involvement in the 100 Year Celebration. Adventure Base 100 will be in St Louis in August. I don't know about you, but I don't find St. Louis in August to be very enjoyable.
Let me have your feedback and if there is some interest, I'll start checking into things more in depth.
